Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5 This page is designed to give you an overview of what to expect from Year 5 over the coming year.
Year 5 sees the children entering Upper Key Stage 2. From the beginning of Year 5, we strive to become great learners who are excited to discover new knowledge and learn new skills in all subjects. As some of the oldest pupils in the school, Year 5 are encouraged to develop independence and resilience; they are also presented with opportunities to take on extra responsibilities.
Reading & Reading Books
Every child has an individual reading book, which they should take home each night to share with you. Year 5 children are expected to bring their book into school each day and are able to exchange it for a new one when needed. In Key Stage 2, the children keep a record of the books that they read and need to comment in their own reading log. Their reading logs are regularly monitored in school. Please feel free to add any comments as parents.
We encourage the children to read a range of material in addition to any of the books taken from school. It is vital that the children develop a true love of reading as they progress in Year 5 from learning to read to reading to learn.
Independent learning
All children have personal login details for a variety of online learning sites.
Children should aim to spend 10 minutes on Spelling Shed at least twice a week, completing the set activities.
Recall of the times tables facts is crucial for supporting many concepts in Maths. Daily practice (5-10 minutes each day) playing on TTRS helps the children to improve the speed of their recall of the times tables (and their related division) facts.
Additionally, the children can access Purple Mash at any time and complete any of the educational games available there.
Uniform & PE Kit
Please make sure your child’s name is written into all items of PE kit, uniform and coats. This makes identification of lost items so much easier. PE lessons are held every Tuesday and Friday afternoon. It is useful to include both indoor and outdoor kits in their PE bags as, weather permitting, we aim to do PE outside as much as possible.
As always, we encourage the children to come to school looking smart, with shirts tucked in, top buttons fastened and black sensible shoes. Trainers and boots are not allowed. Nails should be clean and free of nail varnish. Jewellery should be limited to simple stud earrings.
Snacks & Packed Lunches
As a healthy school we encourage the children to eat a wide range of healthy snacks and lunches. We would prefer fruit or vegetables only for playtime snacks and water for drinks during the day.
Please follow our school Twitter feed, to share in the wonderful work going on in school @StMarysDuk
Class DoJo
We use Class Dojo to share and celebrate examples of good work in addition to sharing class and whole school messages. Please ensure that you are linked in to our class page and check that your notifications are turned on. When needed, we will also use Class Dojo to set online learning tasks.
To further enhance the children’s learning experience, if you have any photographs or video clips of any interesting or exciting activities completed at home or anywhere outside of school that you would like to share with us, please upload them on to Class Dojo.
We are really looking forward to working with you and your child over the coming year. With your help and support, each child will be able to fully access their learning in order to achieve their full potential.
Thank you for your continuing support
